Flowers are a perfect way to express one’s feelings. For centuries, roses have attracted people with their beauty. Irrespective of their color, roses are flowers that make people feel special. Apart from their beauty, the rose is the only flower that symbolizes so many meanings and feelings.

The color pink denotes gratitude, grace, fun, joy, sweetness, and gentleness. The pink rose also represents style and admiration. It is the perfect way of thanking a person and can also be given as a token of appreciation. It is generally seen that if a pink rose is given or received, it states that the person is respected for their uniqueness and for the fact that they are genuine. Pink roses also express that people are liked for their companionship and respectability.

Since the pink rose depicts happiness, it is generally seen that they are used for decorating bouquets. They are also used to decorate for marriages. As it symbolizes pride and deep fondness, they are gifted while celebrating birthdays and wedding anniversaries. Pink roses are usually given to those who have achieved a remarkable or significant accomplishment. Since pink roses are known for their delicate appearance, they exude a sense of warmth and harmony.

Pink roses are a way to communicate feelings such as love, like, and thankfulness. During ancient times, pink was the color of negativity as it depicted pain, suffering, and also death. However, as people became more and more aware of the color pink, it was widely accepted as the color of joy and love. Innocent love that has not yet been expressed, can blossom into the feeling of true love by giving pink flowers.

The color pink is a friendly, faithful, compassionate, and pleasant one. It is not only attractive, but is also the perfect way of expressing good luck, congratulations, and so on. Pink roses are also given to loved ones on the occasion of Valentine’s Day. Pink roses are, hence, accepted universally as a symbol of beauty.

Potted roses are practical options for a full patch if you do not have the space or the energy to manage a full-blown garden. You can always learn in a huff how to grow and care for a bunch of potted roses, lock in soil moisture with the efficiency of cigar humidors, and get rid of tiny pests better than the Terminator. Read on to get more ideas to start your potted roses.

Pots and Roses

Cramped for garden space or living on the 12th floor of the condo? Then there’s hardly any option for you but to make do with potted roses and other plant ornamentals. A little green corner in the high-rise or concrete jungle can give you escape from the hustle and bustle of life in mega cities, or help you forget the drab tenement housing environment.

It does not require much effort to start your own potted garden. You’ll need the following:

* A place with enough sunshine and shade
* Pots of varied sizes, shapes, and colors
* Ready mixed soil for potted plants
* Variety of roses for a color scheme effect
* Rubber gloves
* Garden spades

Starting Your Garden

Indoor planting is not as difficult as starting a mega garden outdoors. As long as you follow the instructions carefully and have the necessary gardening implements, you’re good to go. Forget about the green thumb myth, these tips can guide in your gardening adventure:

* When ready to plant, slowly take out the rosebush from the container and untangle matted roots. Remove any injured or broken roots. Add soil mix at the bottom of the pot and rest the roots on it. Gently fill with soil without going overboard. Press the soil slowly as you go along.

* Never put too much soil in the pot, or the soil will be washed away when watering. Thoroughly water the roses after planting. This will settle the soil, and you can gauge if more soil is needed.

* The ideal time to pot roses is during winter time. The roses are undeveloped or semi-dormant in winter. With this condition, the plants will have much time to set themselves up before summer.

Roses in pots require much needed care and attention. You just don’t plant them in pots and leave them there. A “that’s it, I’m done” attitude won’t make the flowers last long. They dry out faster than roses planted on the ground. In this case, they need frequent watering. But don’t flood the pot. Just make sure the soil is wet. Every week or two the roses need pruning as this encourages new growth.

Roses, like pets, need all your attention and devotion. Mind the pests that may harm your plants the same way your grandfather took care of his cigar humidors. Instead of spending money on pesticides, get rid of them the natural way. Wipe the leaves with water boiled with chili peppers. No pest can endure the sting, but use rubber gloves when giving the plants the “hot” treatment.

If you have to go out of town for a few days, just move the potted roses to a cooler part of the house. The growth will slow down and moisture loss will be lessened, but be sure to water more before you leave.

In cases where you have to be gone for weeks, ask someone to care for the roses while you are gone. Your friendly neighbor can do the job with proper instructions. Choose someone who loves flowers. It would be better if the friend has her own potted plants as it would not be much of an inconvenience to her or him.

New trend

More and more people are going for potted plants. These are convenient and easier to maintain, and the blooms brighten any corner of the home, whether it be a high rise or a cramped apartment.

Indoor flowers such as roses add romance to any living room – cramped or not. It rejuvenates the spirit and gives people a special joy to behold the roses in full bloom. You don’t need a $20,000 oil painting from the masters to give your apartment or condo space that special touch.

In need of a hobby but don’t feel like planting rosebushes? Pick up your Cross pens and start writing.
When most people think of roses, they think of Valentine’s Day or some other romantic occasion. It is because these flowers are considered to be the special occasion flower. They are also considered to be some of the most beautiful and sweet smelling flowers on earth. These famous flowers are known and accepted universally as a symbol of love and affection from one person to another.

You will find them in every florist, on display at hospitals, anniversary celebrations, weddings, funerals, special occasions and on the table in many homes. However, to the true rose lover these flowers are more than an occasional event, but a year-round experience of joy and fulfillment. These individuals want to produce, care and enjoy roses all the time. However, for many of them, they have found the reconciling of their passion for roses and the care of roses to be very difficult.

They desire the results of having these flowers around or even producing award-winning roses, but have missed learning the little tips necessary to produce such a bushel.

Therefore, they struggle day after day and miss out on a great experience. If they only knew, with a little bit more knowledge, they could succeed.

The Different Aspects of Roses

Roses are one of the most commonly known and grown international flower. There international fame is due to the fact that there are so many different varieties and they will grow in most climates.

There are believed to be 200 known distinct species and over 20,000 cultivars.

There are also numerous colors of roses such as: black, white, blue, orange, peach, coral, burgundy, lavender, red, pink, and yellow.

Then there are different types of roses, such as, hybrid teas, floribundas, miniatures, mini-floras, climbing, old garden, shrubs and polyanthas. These plants can be grown as miniatures all the way up to 50 feet, depending upon the species.

The Different Aspects of Caring for Roses

The following are some special tips every rose grower should apply once they have decided on their color or scheme of colors, the size or sizes they desire for the roses to grow and the climate conditions under which their roses will be exposed.

1) Choose the right location – roses love lots of sunlight to reach up toward and some bushes can grow high and wide, therefore, make sure you have the space.

2) The soil must be of a soft and nutritious mixture with good drainage. This is a must not an option.

3) Water your roses often, but lightly. Do not water directly on the foliage, but instead on the ball area. This will help guard against fungal diseases.

4) Mulch around your plants. This will help against weed development, diseases, and having to water so often. It will also help regulate the temperature and lock in nutrients.

5) Understand that 90% of good rose gardening is in the pruning. Roses need pruning in order to develop properly. If you fail to do this, your garden will fail.

6) Keep on hand an insect repellent. Good roses gardens attract insects. You will have to deal with this issue.

There is so much more information to pass along too you.

By Thomas Andrews

New, low-maintenance rose varieties are introducing rose gardening to new demographic groups, and redefining the schema of the traditional rosarian. After the Rose Knock OutTM was chosen as an All- America Rose Selection (AARS) in 2000, it sold better in the following years than any rose ever before. The disease resistance and hardiness of this plant made it accessible to even the most novice gardeners. Commercial landscapers who normally avoided roses because of the hassle began using them everywhere. This was the start of a different way of thinking about roses.

Change is Good

The breeder who developed the Rose Knock Out , William Radler, was interested in roses from a very young age, and this shaped his entire career. He recognized something fundamentally wrong with the rose industry and set out to correct it. His goal was to “breed the maintenance out of roses.”

Traditionally, old garden varieties and Hybrid Teas dominated the rose market. These varieties were delicate and bred specifically for their beauty. Their diseases, pests, and climate limitations were the burden of the individual gardener– a burden born with great pride, because very few people were willing to make the sacrifice. To have a yard full of roses spoke loudly, touting the reputation of the rosarian. Many people who grew roses grew little else. That is starting to change.

A few die-hard old-fashioned rose gardeners may believe that the experience is cheapened, and they may fear that the doors of an exclusive club have been opened to the whole neighborhood. However, most will welcome the new varieties with a sigh of relief, and will delight in seeing their ranks swell as more and more gardeners successfully incorporate roses into their repertoire.

A Good Idea Goes a Long Way

William Radler developed the first Knock Out in 1989, and it hit the mainstream market in 2000, causing sweeping changes. The Knock Out roses have been unbelievably popular, and Radler hasn’t stopped breeding, with the goal of a maintenance-free rose still in mind. There have been the Pink Knock Out , the Double Knock Out , Ramblin’ Red , Carefree Sunshine , and the Rainbow Knock Out . This year, the Rainbow Knock Out picked up another AARS award for the Knock Out line. The Rainbow is the most floriferous, most disease resistant, and has the longest growing season of any Knock Out so far. They just keep getting better.

The buying public has responded positively to low-maintenance roses. And the popularity of these new roses has changed a lot about the way that roses are marketed and the way they are bred. In the eighties, you would get a full paragraph about the color and maybe another about its fragrance. Now, when you read about roses in a catalog, all of them are “easy to grow”, “sturdy”, and “exceptionally disease resistant.” It’s not just the retailers; the breeders have also shifted their focus. There is a new rose culture, a new generation of breeders out to grow the strongest roses, and our gardens and our backs will reap the benefits.

Roses are beautiful, and not surprisingly, they are one of the most popular flowers to give as a present. Of course, they also cost quite a bit to purchase in a bouquet, so how can you save money on the cost?

The best solution is to simply grow your own. So how do you do that?

1. Prune the roses you have in winter or early spring, once the rose shows signs of new growth.

2. Cut out the dead and damaged branches, then cut all but four or five main stems.

3. Cut the stems by over a third. You should make these cuts right above an outward-facing bud, which is the red bulb on the outside of the rosebush. This will cause the bulb to grow up and out.

4. You should start using fertilizer on your roses as soon as the growing season begins. Use a liquid fertilizer for three to four weeks during the season.

5. Water needs to be given to roses constantly, as they require much of it during the growing season. You should give them about one inch of water each week.

6. You should buy some mulch and lay down about one to two inches of it for the roses. Try a mix of wood chips, pine needles, grass clippings or other biodegradable materials.

7. Once the roses are spent, trim them to allow the bush to produce more. Most will bloom in June, while others may take a little while longer.

8. Roses can become infested with insects or diseased, so you need to make sure you spray them. If a part does become diseased, make sure to trim the affected part and take it to a professional who can tell you what to do to keep the rose from dying.

9. Do not fertilize your roses past early autumn. If you do so, it could produce roses that will get hurt by the cold in the wintertime.

10. In the winter, make sure to put soil over the base of the roses. Depending on the region you live in and how cold it gets, it should be a few inches to a foot in height. About two weeks after that, wrap the entire plant in a burlap bag.

By growing your own roses, you don’t have to worry about buying them every year and plus you will get the satisfaction of having grown them specially by yourself.

Many of us think of a beautiful garden as an almost unattainable goal, and certainly, a rose garden seems even more intimidating. Rose gardening has earned a reputation as being very difficult, a task only the most ambitious gardener with plenty of time on her hands would undertake. In reality, however, rose gardening just takes a little planning, a bit of maintenance and some patience.

As with any garden, a rose garden should be cleaned regularly. Keeping fallen leaves and other garden debris away from the roots of the plants will enable you to water the plants directly at the roots as well as keep fungus and other problems at bay.

Mulch is a wonderful ally to rose gardens. It weeds away and helps to keep the moisture level of your plants consistent. For this benefit, add mulch to your regular care shortly before the first bloom appears. In winter, careful mulching will protect your roses from a dangerous cycle of freezing and thawing, causing the plant to shift underground, damaging the root system. By reinforcing the plant with several inches of soil and covering that soil with mulch, you will protect the plant’s root system from the harsh conditions of winter and you will see a healthy plant emerge in the spring.

One of the most important tasks in any garden is watering. It is always important to maintain adequate moisture content for your plants, not too wet and certainly not too dry. Both extremes are detrimental to the health of your whole garden. When watering your rose plants, it is essential to water only around the base of the plant. Introducing water to the leaves and stems of the plants invites both rust and fungal diseases to your plants. The roses will enjoy a good root soaking when the weather conditions require it, saturating the soil to a depth of six to eight inches, rather than simply spraying the plants.

Careful feeding of your rose bushes will keep them looking their best throughout their flowering season and will keep the plants healthy during the dormant period. Your local garden center will have many choices for fertilizer for your roses, and you should carefully follow the instructions for the product you have chosen in measuring the fertilizer according to your type of rose. In general, you should feed your roses in early spring, as soon as you can see buds beginning to swell. Feed again after the plants have produced a full bloom. Another feeding should follow in late summer for most climates. If you have a long growing season, a fourth feeding in early October will hold your plants through the winter.

Following just a few simple guidelines will enable you to grow a beautiful rose garden that will add so much to your home landscape. Your effort will pay off with blooming, healthy plants that will be sure to impress your friends and neighbors.

Quite a few people want to know if roses are difficult to grow. The answer is definitely not. Actually, roses are simple to grow and need only a little more care than any other perennial plant.

Here is a look at the planting, care and maintenance of roses.

Planting Roses

Preparing the soil for roses is vitally important since they use a lot of nutrients. An excellent idea would be to use 100% organic compost, not just for the nutrients provided in the compost, but also because the compost will drain well and still keep lots of moisture. Rose need plenty of water, as well as a well-drained planting bed.

Caring for Your Roses

Since Roses blossom during the entire growing season, they are big users of nutrients and will need regular fertilizing.

In the spring when the leaves begin to bud out, feed your roses, and again in late summer or early fall, depending on what area of the country you live in.

How to Deal With Diseases That Effect Roses Roses are vulnerable to mildew, fungi and insect infestation. Most of these diseases can be prevented from happening. Even better, all of them can be controlled with regular applications of fungicides and insecticides. Several kinds of beneficial insects can be placed into your garden to help you control insect infestations, without using chemicals.

Getting Your Roses Ready for Winter

In warm climates, not much needs to be done to prepare your roses for winter, beyond adding a good layer of mulch. In colder climates that have temperatures sink below 25 degrees F, you will want to protect your roses with additional mulch.

Building cages to surround your roses and then filling them with mulch after the initial freeze will make sure that your roses survive throughout the winter. Then, you can see your beautiful roses bloom again in the spring!
