How To Plant Your New Rose Bush To Ensure Years Of Enjoyment

Roses are generally shipped bare rooted wrapped in peat moss, but they can also be purchased at your local garden center potted. Roses are usually sold in the late winter for planting in March or April in most areas. They are shipped in a dormant stage and it’s important that they be planted before new growth starts.

Your roses should be planted in an area that receives at least six hours of sunlight daily. The soil should be well drained and contain abundant organic material. If necessary, add compost when you plant the bush. Roses also like their soil slightly acid in the pH range of 5.8 to 6.3. Soil pH can be checked easily with a basic soil test kit and the proper amendments incorporated into the soil at planting time.

Rose bushes should be spaced 24 to 36 inches apart. The bushes will grow and good air circulation is essential for preventing diseases and mildew. Check the planting instructions that came with the bush or ask your local garden center for advice specific to your variety and location.

Be sure that the area where you will be planting the roses is free of weeds and grasses.

Bare Root Plants-

Soak the roots of the bush for 12-24 hours to help it with the transition back to being in the soil. Prune the roots back one-half inch to encourage new root growth. Dig a hole for your rose bush that is at least two feet in diameter. Prune the roots back one-half inch to encourage new root growth. Mix some compost in with the dirt that you dug out of the hole. Create a mound of dirt in the bottom of the hole and spread the roots over it. Gently pack the remaining soil around the roots making sure that the graft union is slightly below the final soil level. This can be easily checked by placing a straightedge across the hole.

Potted Plants-
Potted rose planting is generally the same except all you need to do is pop the plant out of the container and ensure that it is planted at the same depth as it was in the pot.

Your newly planted roses should be mulched, but keep the mulch a few inches away from the stem. They should also be watered daily for the first week and every couple of days after that, adjusting for rainfall.

Once your roses start growing they should be fertilized with a rose specific fertilizer every three months.

The roses should be pruned in early spring before new growth occurs in March. The link below has a good description of the pruning process.

Following these instructions should ensure enjoyment of your roses for many years to come.

Landscaping with roses

Basically, landscaping involves arrangement of plants, trees and flowers in a particular space, in a particular manner, to make its appearance synchronized and beautiful, the space may be someone’s yard or the premises of a corporate building. Landscaping can be fun, especially if you like gardening, and using a lot of rose bushes in you project can make your project even more interesting and appreciable.

Planning is the first and the most important step in any type of landscaping project. The main purpose of planning in landscaping is to decide how to arrange the rose garden and the other plants and trees in order to enhance the beauty of the space. Basically it is similar to gardening, but is done in a systematic and creative manner. To begin with, sketching out the whole plan on paper can be a good idea. The sketch should include the complete and accurate details of the area to be landscaped, these details will definitely prove useful for chalking out a good plan.

Another factor that needs careful consideration while planning the landscape is the color combination. Having a little knowledge about colors can be of great help. It is important to make sure that the color of the roses complement it’s surrounding and the structures present on the area to be landscaped. It’s advisable to plant flowers of contrast colors, to get the combination right.

While planning the layout of your rose plants on your landscape with the other bushes, it is very important to give special consideration to the spacing between them. Plants require sufficient space and water to thrive and over crowding can ruin the beauty as well as the growth of the plants. Hence it is advisable to restrict the use of too many plants and pay more attention to spacing and color combination for excellent results.

Whether you’re new to gardening or an old hand, a climbing rose bush provides both beauty and pride to your flower garden or landscape.

One of the benefits of including roses in your garden is obviously the fragrance they provide as well as the gorgeous flowers. Who wouldn’t love going outside and basking in the beauty and fragrance of a luscious rose garden?

But in addition to their decorative capacity, the climbing variety in particular can also solve some of your home improvement issues. For example, does your view at home include the plain, drab wall of a building – maybe a garage or utility shed? Or maybe you have a fence that, while still functional, has seen better days.

Because rose vines grow up rather than out, they are the perfect solution to many of these landscaping eye-sores. Although there are many types of plants that can grow with climbing vines, roses are perhaps the most beautiful flower to be had. Why not go for the best and solve your problem with style?

Climbing roses are not difficult to grow. In fact, they can be downright easy – just be sure they will have a good amount of sunshine, good soil and of course, a place to climb such as a trellis or fence. The best part of all for gardeners who tend to lack patience is that these vines will grow quickly.

In order for your vine-filled trellis or fence to look its best, remember to perform the occasional pruning. Shaping your rose vines is not difficult, but you’ll need to make sure they are properly trained to grow to whatever you’ve attached them to. You’ll gain the most enjoyment from your flowers when you take these simple steps to ensure proper growth.

It’s important to note that climbing roses are not the same as the variety you cut and use in bouquets. They are meant to be enjoyed in their natural, on-the-vine state. Keep that in mind when choosing the best location for your plants – you want to get as much enjoyment from them as possible.

As with other roses, you’ll find a wide selection of colors, sizes and varieties to choose from. And there’s really no reason to limit yourself to one variety – choose several and have a garden that is uniquely you.

One favorite you might consider is known as Golden Showers. This sunny-yellow rose has ruffled blooms that are sure to brighten up anything it’s attached to. If you like traditional red roses, the Rambling Red Rose is also a nice selection. With rich red double rose blooms, this plant is also disease resistant. Another great climber is the Iceberg – and it looks just like its name suggests. This vigorous plant produces so many white blooms that it has been described as a virtual snow bank.

If you want to have a striking garden and landscape, consider adding one or more climbing rose bushes to the mix. Best of all, because these plants are so easy to care for, your friends and neighbors will think you have the greenest thumb on the block.
